KINGS OF MACEDON. Time of Antigonos II Gonates-Demetrios II Aitolikes. 246/5-229 B.C. AR tetradrachm. 16.76 gm. 30 mm. Amphipolis or Pella mint. Head of Poseidon right, with luxuriant hair bound with seaweed / Apollo naked seated left on prow, holding bow; BAΣIΛEΩΣ ANTIΓONOΥ in two lines on prow, monogram below. Panagopoulou (2000) Period III, 205 (O34/R196). HGC 3.1, 1051 (Antigonos III Doson). SNG Copenhagen 1204. SNG Alpha Bank 1046. Very Fine; rich old toning with underlying luster.

Includes David Sear certificate of authenticity, with historical notes which bring the coin to life. He states "a notable naval victory...off the island of Andros in 227 BC probably (inspired) this beautiful coin type (with) the rugged magnificence of the sea-god (contrasting with) the graceful elegance of Apollo."
