Roman Imperial, Octavian August, Denarius - VERY RARE

Very rare and desirable Octavian denarius minted by Mark Sanqvinius, monetary triumvir from 17 BC. Katarzyna Balbuza in her study 'Augustowskie emissions tresviri aere argento auro flando feriundo Between the republic and the empire - family or imperial propaganda?' writes: 'The reverse of aureus and denarii from the Roman mint, signed on the reverse with his name, represent a comet above the head of the young man in a laurel wreath. The existing scientific interpretations of the iconography of the reverse go towards the tradition associated with Julius Caesar and Augustus in the context of, among others, ludi saeculares, which cannot be ruled out. However, it is also possible to refer to the gentilicium of the monetary triumvir - SANQVINIVS.'

Katarzyna Balbuza w swoim opracowaniu 'Augustowskie emisje tresviri aere argento auro flando feriundo Między republiką i cesarstwem – propaganda rodowa czy cesarska?' pisze tak: 'Rewersy aureusów i denarów z mennicy rzymskiej sygnowane na rewersach jego imieniem przedstawiają kometę nad głową młodzieńca w wieńcu laurowym. Istniejące w nauce interpretacje ikonografii rewersu idą w kierunku tradycji związanej z Juliuszem Cezarem i Augustem w kontekście m.in. ludi saeculares, czego nie można wykluczyć. Możliwe jest tu jednak również nawiązanie do gentilicium triumwira monetarnego – SANQVINIVS.'
