FRANCE. Creation of the Grand Sanhedrin Silver Medal, 1806. Napoleon I. PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, Unc Details.

Bramsen-527. Diameter: 40 mm. By Depaulis & Brenet. Obverse: Bust of Napoleon in military uniform right, laurel wreath above, legend around; Reverse: GRAND SANHEDRIN XXX. MAI MDCCCVL. Napoleon in imperial costume stands and receives the Tablets of the Law from a seated rabbi modeled after Michelangelo's sculpture of Moses. Bramsen describes this issue as a later striking executed in England sometime after 1815, and he claims that Depaulis had no role in the work. Bright Specimen surfaces show some wiping, but they remain fully brilliant and argent. A RARE and intriguing example of Napoleonic Judaica.

Struck in commemoration of the Grand Sanhedrin, a group of rabbis and community leaders which Napoleon assembled to settle questions of Jewish law in the French Empire.

Estimate: $800 - $1200
