GREAT BRITAIN. John Gibson Bronze Medal, 1874. London Mint. NGC MS-64 Brown.

BHM-2982; Eimer-1636. By J. S. Wyon. Art Union of London series. Diameter: 54mm. Obverse: Bare head left; Reverse: Hunter and Dog: statue of Grecian male right, nude, restraining dog by its collar. Deep chocolate brown surfaces, with a particularly vibrant glossy nature.

A Welsh neoclassical sculptor, John Gibson studied in Rome under Antonio Canova at the rather late age of 27. He quickly attained an ability to incorporate the mundane scenes of everyday life into mythological and historical representations in his sculpture, such as Amazon Thrown from her Horse, Nymph and Cupid, and, the subject of this medal and one of his most famous works, Hunter and Dog.
