ITALY. Venice. Lead Bulla (Document Seal), ND (1709-22). Giovanni II Cornaro. Grade: NEARLY EXTREMELY FINE.
Weight: 45.59 gms; Diameter: 36 mm. Obverse: St. Mark standing left, presenting staff with banner to doge kneeling to right; Reverse: IOANNES / CORNELIVS / DEI GRA DVX / VENETIAR / ET C in five lines; rosettes and stars around. Though some letters are missing near the upper portion of both the obverse and reverse, enough remains on the reverse to identify the owner of this seal. Quite dark in the recesses, with a lighter appearance upon the high points; meanwhile, the chord is still evident at the top and bottom. Much more commonly encountered from official documents of the popes, bullae (lead document seals) are much SCARCER when they emanate from their Venetians rivals, the doges.
Estimate: $60 - $100
