ROMAN REPUBLIC. C. Vibius C.f. C.n. Pansa Caetronianus. AR Denarius (3.88 gms), Rome Mint, 48 B.C. NGC MS, Strike: 5/5 Surface: 3/5. Brushed.
Cr-449/1b; Syd-948; CRI-20a. Obverse: Mask of Pan right; pedum to left; Reverse: Jupiter, with head facing, seated left on throne, holding patera and scepter. Definitionally a survivor, this example defies belief in its state of preservation, with no evidence of circulation or contact. Boldly struck, this piece is centered relatively well for the type, and is artfully decorated with areas of electric blue and red toning. The only minor detraction--some evidence of brushing present on the reverse that is not particularly harsh or distracting. When put together, this example is certainly worthy of a fine Roman collection.
Estimate: $300 - $500
