Note: The province of Sira, located now in the Tumkur district of Karnataka, holds an important position in the history of the Mughals in the Deccan. After the conquest of the Bijapur Sultanate by Aurangzeb in 1684, it became the headquarters of Balaghat. The province comprised the Carnatic regions south of the Tungabhadra river and was composed of seven Parganas: Basavapatna, Budihal, Sira, Penukonda, Dodballapur, Hoskote, and Kolar.
At first, it was virtually ruled by Afghan nawabs of Arcot on behalf of the Mughal emperors until 1757. It subsequently came under the Marathas for a short period and was finally merged into the Mysore kingdom under Haider Ali in 1761, whose career started under the employ of the Nawab.
