From the Dr. Jay M. Galst Collection. Ex Coin Galleries (14 April 1999), lot 318.
The A below the date was used to signify the coin being struck during the first half of the year (conversely, the B was used to note if the coin was struck in the second half of the year). The A is not seen on this coin. It is a known variant, and both types are recorded under the same RPC number.
