British Guiana 1.1.1942 P-16 PMG Very Fine 20 20 DollarsFor British Commonwealth collectors, banknotes from British Guiana represent a rewarding challenge, as the higher denominations are seldom seen today and the entire series is downright rare in higher grades. This series, which was gradually introduced into circulation as needed between 1937 and 1942 consists of six denominations, of which the $20 is the penultimate. British Guiana was a small colony and higher denominations (which represented a huge purchasing power at the time of issue) were not printed in large quantities. To date, only two prefixes are attributed to this denomination: A/1 and A/2. While the three lowest denominations have multiple date varieties only a single date was issued for the $20, which carries the printed signatures of George D. Owen, Edwin F. McDavid and William D. D'Andrade. The $20 is the highest denomination one can reasonably hope to obtain in issued form and it is extremely desirable as such, although the number of available pieces is extremely limited and offerings are infrequent at best. Burgundy and green hues accentuate the engraving of Kaieteur Falls at front. Curiously, the portrait notes of British Guiana have the portrait of the monarch placed on the back, something that is highly unusual in the Commonwealth series. Minor repairs are noted by the grading company, which were tastefully applied and are virtually undetectable even with the aid of a UV light. A key type for the continent of South America, as well as for the British Commonwealth, as well as for King George VI portrait notes. The first we have offered, and a happenstance that should not be taken lightly. PMG mentions "Minor Repairs".
