Sweden, Gustav Vasa SM 119 1 mark 1558 9.81 g. Stockholm. Type with portrait with long and straight beard. Date "1558". The 1 mark of 1558 with long, straight beard is very scarce. However this example with spelling BEAVS, instead of BEATVS, in the reverse legend is extremely rare. In Roberto Delzannos reference work 'Sveriges Myntbok 995 - 2022' this variety is given XR rarity. None of previous cataloguers have mentioned the fact that this coin is lightly tooled/worked on on the rim. This could explain the low weight of the present example, but it must not necessarily have any effect. Gustav I was, among other things, creative at manipulating coinage. Underweight and debased coinage is plentiful during his reign. The edge is slightly worked. Nevertheless an attractive and well struck example with beautiful patina. RRR.
