Sweden, Johan III SM 123 4 mark 1568 (klippe) 12.95 g. Stockholm. Cleaned, scratch. RRR. Ex Ingvar Ehnbom, Malmö Mynthandel 2000. Ex Ahlström auction 17, lot 84. SMB 129. Lev 764 var. Of the 4 mark we know of the following four examples in private hands: 1) This example 2) Ex Bonde auction 1, lot 214. 3) Ex Ahlström auction 4, lot 105. 4) Ex S. Svensson (SS 1563), SNF auction May 1966, lot 557 (unsold). 5) Ex Tradera July 2021. The example listed as number 4 may still not have been sold, but in that case it has been gifted by the Swedish Numismatic Association to The Royal Coin Cabinet of Sweden. The year 1568 is special in the history of Swedish coinage in that three regents, Erik XIV, Johan III and Counts Johan and Karl all minted coins with this date. This has only happened once more (in 1592) in the coinage of Sweden. The klippes of Johan III are to be regarded as the most rare coinage of 1568. The herewith presented 4 mark 1568 of Johan III, is very scarce, while the 2 mark is unique in private hands. 1+
