SASANIAN KINGS. Yazdgard I, 399-420. Drachm (Silver, 29 mm, 4.20 g, 3 h), AS (Aspahān or Aspānvar) mint. crowned and cuirassed bust of Yazdgard I to right, wearing mural crown with frontal crescent and korymbos. Rev. Fire altar with ribbons and two attendants flanking; crescents and pellets flanking flames. SNS Type Ib1/1a. Very fine.

For the first - and only - time in the Sasanian monetary history specific mintmarks were used under Yazdgerd I. In total seven different marks can be discerned and form a (relative) chronology. Our coin shows the 6th variant on the reverse ('crescent-pellet-crescent' and 'pellet-crescent' to left and right of the altar's flame). This places our coin towards the later years of Yazdgard's reign.
