According to Howgego, the XII countermark seen here was applied after c. 70, probably at Melitene or while the legion was on campaign, or perhaps both. A terminus ante quem is provided by a countermark of the head of Hadrian stamped over this countermark. The XII countermark is occasionally found in conjunction with other countermarks, notably FVLM (Howgego 736), which in turn is sometimes seen in conjunction with the legionary countermarks for the legions III Cyrenaica and X Fretensis. This suggests the countermarks were applied along the Syrian limes during a time of conflict, and considering the time frame of between c. 70 and the reign of Hadrian, Trajan's Parthian War is the not certain but fairly obvious context.
