According to Aesop, a peacock petitioned the goddess Juno for the voice of a nightingale, but Juno refused his request, saying: "Be content with your lot; one cannot be first in everything." Anyone who has raised or been around peacocks will understand. Although they have some of the most incredible plumage of any bird, they do make a terrible noise that can make one's hair stand on end.
