BYZANTINE SEALS. Georgios, late 11th - early 12th century. Seal or Bulla (Lead, 24 mm, 14.39 g, 12 h), Constantinople. MHP - ΘOY / H AΓIO/COPITHCA The Virgin Mary in the type of Hagiosoritissa, standing facing, with both her hands raised in supplication towards a medallion of the young Jesus Christ at her left. Rev. +ΓΕΩΡ/ΓΙΟΝ CON/ OIKETHN / CKEΠOIC / -KOPH- in five lines within simple dotted border. Unpublished but comparable to the seal of Nicholaos Hagiotheodorites, Laurent V/2, 1431. A very unusual depiction of Virgin Mary and a very interesting seal overall. Obverse very slightly off centre, otherwise, very fine.
The type of Panagia (Virgin Mary) Hagiosoritissa was particularly popular in the 11th century.
