BYZANTINE SEALS. John Kamateros Kanikles, Circa 12th century. Seal or Bulla (Lead, 24.0 mm, 8.13 g, 12 h). MHP-ΘY Facing bust of the Virgin Mary, orans, wearing chiton and maphorion, bearing a medallion with a facing bust of the infant Jesus Christ. Rev. ΘΚΕ ΒΟΗ/ΘΕ ΤΩ CΩ ΔΟΥ/ΛΩ ΙΩ ΚΑΜΑΤΗΡΩ ΤΩ ΚΑ/ΝΙΚΛΕΙΩ in five lines within linear border. Very fine.

The owner of this seal was member of the Kamateros family which in the lat 12th century had close relations with the Angelos dynasty. Among the most famous Kamateros was John I Kamateros, patriarch of Constantinople during the fall of Constantinople to the Crusaders of the disgraceful fourth Crusade. It is tempting to link this seal with his early stages of his carrier, although there is no sufficient evidence to support this hypothesis.
