BYZANTINE SEALS, Provincial Administration. George Serblias, praitor of Thrace and Macedonia, circa 1200-126. Seal or Bulla (Lead, 31 mm, 24.21 g, 12 h). O A/ΓI/OS - NI/KO/ΛA/OS Nimbate figure of Saint Nikolaos of Myra standing facing, wearing ecclesiastical robes, raising his right hand in benediction and holding Book of Gospels with his left. Rev. CΦPAΓIC / TOY ΠPETΩΡΟS/ ΘPAKHC KAÌ MA/KEΔONÍAC ΓEΩ/PΓΙΟΥ ΤΟΥ CE/PBΛÍOY in six lines within plain dotted border. Wassiliou-Seibt 2012, p. 54. A very interesting and extremely rare seal of the paraitor of Macedon and Thrace . Very fine.


The surname "Serblias" gives us a hint of the origin of the family which was probably the fortress town of Servia in Macedon, close to the modern city of Kozani in Greece.
