ISLAMIC, Umayyad Caliphate. Period of 'Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan, AH 65-86 / AD 685-705. Fals (Copper, 23 mm, 3.00 g, 8 h), 'Standing Caliph' type, Tanukh, c. AH 70s = AD 690s. Bearded Caliph standing facing, placing his right hand on the hilt of his sword; name and title of caliph around. Rev. Cross transformed to Φ standing on base and three steps; in field to left, "bi-tanukh"; in field to right,"wafin"; around, 'lā ilāha illā allāh wahdahu muhammad rasūl allāh' (There is no God but God alone; Muhammad is the Prophet of God). Album 3531. Goodwin, Standing 331-2. Overstruck. Brown patina, and despite peripheral flatness, quite nice for the issue. Good very fine.
