Pietro Gradenigo was Doge of Venice when the Venetian traveller Marco Polo returned from China. In 1294 war broke out between Venice and Genoa, and Polo joined the war effort, only to be captured shortly thereafter. While he was imprisoned by the Genoans, he dictated the tales of his travels to his cellmate, Rustichello da Pisa, a romance writer.
