SICILY. Syracuse. Deinomenid Tyranny, 485-466 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 24.5 mm, 16.91 g, 10 h), struck under Gelon I, c. 485-480. Charioteer driving quadriga walking to right, holding goad in his right hand and the reins in his left; above, Nike flying right to crown the horses. Rev. ΣVRΑΚΟΣΙΟΝ Diademed head of Arethusa to right, her hair bound with a taenia, wearing necklace of pearls; around, four dolphins swimming clockwise. Cf. Boehringer Group III, Series VIIIa, 112 (V-/R77, unrecorded obverse die). HGC 2, 1306. Cf. Randazzo 267–8 (same reverse die). SNG ANS -. SNG Munich 935 (same reverse die). Rare with an unpublished die and of attractive late Archaic style. Good very fine.
