Anonymous. 6th-4th centuries BC. Æ Aes Formatum (17.81 g). Irregular cast bronze in the shape of an astragalos. ICC p. 76, 6. As made, earthen green patina.

From the Ken Bressett Collection. Ex Walter Sharidan 2003 @ $75.

The game of knucklebones was played with three or four small animal bones that have a distinctive shape on each of their four sides. Special significance was ascribed to the particular combination of sides showing with each toss. One pursuit was associated with the goddess Aphrodite, where the highest throw (four corresponding sides) was called "Aphrodite." Archaeological evidence suggests that knucklebones were often thrown by the devotees of the Cnidian Aphrodite to determine if they would enjoy the goddess' favors
