UNITED STATES: AE medal (18.81g), 1916, H&K-430, official mint medal for the Panama-California Exposition, "So-Called Dollar", full figure of Uncle Sam to right, with pick in right hand over shoulder and shovel in left hand, the two American Continents in background and handle of shovel lies across the Canal Zone, all within center circle; PANAMA CALIFORNIA EXPOSITION SAN DIEGO 1916 in outer margin // PANAMA CANAL OPENED BY S.S. ANCON above, OFFICIAL SOUVENIR in smaller letters just below, the S.S. Ancon, an American cargo and passenger ship, being the first ship to officially transit the Panama Canal, AUG. 15. 1914 in exergue, a couple faint scratches on reverse, pleasing luster, Unc, R. These official bronze medals were designed by C. K. Berryman, a Cartoonist for the Washington Star and engraved by Charles. E. Barber, Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint and struck by the Mint Exhibit on the fairgrounds. This was first and only official exposition medal with Uncle Sam as the main design. Also, the striking of this issue for both years of the exposition represented the first occasion "where a medal of this character had been minted and dated for different years."
