ANCIENT SPAIN: Ibsim (Ibiza), AE ¼ unit (4.41g), 2nd century BC, Burgos-923, Villaronga & Benages-719, Bes standing facing, holding sword and serpent // bull charging left, VF. Bes is an ancient deity of Egyptian origin, worshipped throughout the Mediterranean as a protector of households against evil spirits, as well as a god of music, dance, and the nuptial bed. He is often depicted in statues as a bearded dwarf with a pot belly, holding a sword in his right hand and a snake in his left. It was in his honor that Phoenician colonists named one of the Balearic islands Iboshim ("dedicated to Bes"), known today as Ibiza (Eivissa in Catalan).
