GREEK COINS
Thessaly
Ainianes. Circa 360s-350s BC. Dichalkon (Bronze, 20mm, 6.39 g 4), Hypata. Laureate and bearded head of Zeus to left. Rev. ΑΙΝΙΑΝ-ΩΝ Phemios, nude but for chlamys over his shoulder and sword in scabbard, shooting sling to right; behind, leaning against his right leg, two spears. BCD 1015. BMC 18. Rogers 137. SNG Copenhagen 4-5. A rare piece of lovely style, and with a dark, green-black patina. Very fine.
From a European collection acquired prior to 2000.
This coin is of remarkably fine style - note with what detail the slinger is portrayed - and must have been one of the earliest Ainianes bronzes produced. BCD 1015 bears a much coarser reverse.
