GREEK COINS
Lucania

Metapontum. Circa 440-430 BC. Didrachm or Nomos (Silver, 22mm, 7.91 g 7). ΜΕΤΑ Ear of barley. Rev. Apollo, nude, standing facing, his head to left, holding a laurel tree in his right hand and his bow in his left. HN III, 1496. Noe 314. SNG ANS 277. Very rare. Lightly toned. Good very fine.

From the B. in B. Collection, ex Numismatic Fine Arts XIV, 29 November 1984, 19.

The standing figure of Apollo on this coin is quite similar to the slightly earlier standing river god found on the didrachms of Selinos and is a perfect example of the 'stiff' classical style that still showed influences from the archaic period; within a decade this style would become fully classical in feel.
