GREEK COINS
Akarnania
Alyzeia. Circa 330-280 BC. Trichalkon (Bronze, 19mm, 5.51 g 5). Head of Athena to right, wearing crested Attic helmet. Rev. ΑΛΥZΑΙ Head of youthful, beardless (?) Herakles to right, wearing lion skin headdress. BCD Akarnania - (but cf. 74). Imhoof-Blumer, Akarnanien, 17 var. Extremely rare, possibly unpublished. Dark patina. Good fine.
From a European collection, formed before 2005.
The bronzes of Alyzeia are apparently exceedingly rare: BCD only had five after some forty years of collecting. This piece, which seems to have the head of a young Herakles, is different from the very few pieces previously known, which all have an older, bearded head.
