GREEK COINS
Ionia

Phokaia. Late 5th - earlier 4th century BC. Hekte (Electrum, 9mm, 2.51 g). Head of youthful Pan to left, with goat's horn and animal ear; behind, seal swimming upwards. Rev. Quadripartite incuse square. Bodenstedt 73.3 = SNG von Aulock 7950 (this coin). An impressive piece with a lovely head of Pan. Extremely fine.

From the B. in B. Collection, ex Bank Leu 30, 28 April 1982, 179 and from the collections of R. Abecassis and H. von Aulock.

This is a particularly attractive head of a rustic Pan. Bodenstedt had dated it to the later 5th century but that seems distinctly too early and a date into the 4th century is probably more likely.
