ROMAN AND BYZANTINE COINS

Vitellius. AD 69. Denarius (Silver, 19mm, 3.46 g 6), Spanish mint, perhaps Tarraco, January-June 69. A VITELLIVS IMP GERMAN Laureate head of Vitellius to left, with globe at the point of the neck. Rev. CONSENSVS EXERCITVVM Mars, nude but for helmet and cloak over his shoulder, advancing to left, holding spear in his right hand and eagle on vexillum in his left. BMC 84. RIC 23. With an unusually attractive and idealized portrait in high relief. Slightly rough surfaces and with a minor flan fault on the reverse, otherwise, extremely fine.
