ROMAN AND BYZANTINE COINS

Valentinian I. AD 364-375. Solidus (Gold, 20mm, 4.44 g 6), Arelate / Constantina, 364-367. D N VALENTINIANVS P F AVG Rosette diademed, draped and cuirassed bust of Valentinian to right. Rev. RESTITVTOR REIPVBLICÆ / KONSTAN (last three letters in ligature) Emperor standing facing in military dress, his head turned to right, holding labarum with palm on the shaft and inscribed with Christogram in his right hand and Victory on globe in his left. RIC 1 (f). A lovely example. Some slight die faults on the obverse, otherwise, good extremely fine.

From a northern European collection.

The name of Arelate was changed to Constantina to honor Constantine II in 329. This name was used as a mint signature, as here, until the first quarter of the 5th century, but by the later 4th century it was primarily found on silver, with the formula A-R / CONOB being used on gold.
