GREEK COINS
Sicily

Katane. Circa 405-402 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 23mm, 17.38 g 11), unsigned but by Herakleidas. ΚΑΤΑΝΑΙΩΝ Laureate head of Apollo to right. Rev. ΚΑΤΑΝΑΙΩΝ Charioteer driving fast quadriga to left, holding reins in both hands; above, Nike flying right to crown the driver; in exergue, grey mullet swimming to left below inscription. BMFA 268 (same dies). Gulbenkian 194. Rizzo pl. XIV, 9. SNG ANS 1261 SNG Lloyd 904 (same dies). Lightly toned and attractive. Good very fine.

From an American collection, ex Triton XII, 6 January 2009, 80.

The lovely portrait of Apollo on the obverse shows him with short hair, but not quite as short as on the head of Apollo in lot 38 above. In many ways this head provides us with a refined version of the type that also appeared on slightly later issues from the Chalkidian League.
