GREEK COINS
Macedon

Galepsos. 400-348 BC. Chalkous (Bronze, 12mm, 2.13 g 1). Head of youthful Dionysos to left, wearing ivy wreath. Rev. ΓΑΛΗΨΙ[ΩΝ] Forepart of goat to left, his head turned back to right. Demetriadi, Galepsus, type b. SNG Greece 7, 400. A very rare coin from a very rare mint. Attractive and clear with a dark green patina. Very fine.

From a northern European collection.

The coinage of Galepsos was unknown until one was found in the French excavations of Thasos and published by M. Bon in 1936 (though most numismatists were unaware of the publication). Two other pieces were published in 1974 by V. Demetriadi, who was able to prove that the mint was in Macedon, not in Thrace (though he was unaware of Bon's article). Since then a small number of other pieces have turned up, this being a particularly nice example.
