Offa (759-96), Kings of Mercia, Penny, Light coinage, East Anglian mint (c.770-792), moneyer Wihtred, OFFA REX in the angles of a cross superimposed on a central annulet, a pellet in each angle, a rosette at the end of each cross limb. Rev, runic inscription around divided lozenge, pellet in each quarter 1.05g (S.907; N.331; SCBI 67 [Naismith], 42, Chick 181a for obverse). Obverse cleanly struck with precision in both the legends and the motif, especially good detail in the rosettes, darkly toned, Reverse, well set out and fully centred. About or near extremely fine on the obverse, the reverse very fine. Extremely rare, only two known of this type, none with this reverse die combination.
