Berhtwulf, from an etymological perspective meaning 'Bright' and 'Wolf' was King of Mercians between 840-852, the Viking attacks on Mercia took place during his reign, as did the apparent passing of Berkshire from Mercian to West Saxon control. Married to Sæthryth, who had witnessed all of his charters between 840-849, and father to both Beorhtfrith and Beorhtric.
