Harold I (1035-40), Penny, fleur de lis type (c.1038-40), Colchester Mint, moneyer Godric, armoured and diademed bust left with sceptre, legend surrounds HΛROL:D. RE. Rev, pellet at centre of voided long cross, pellet topped fleur de lis between pellets in each angle, reads +GORIC: ON CONC, 1.04g (S.1165; N.803; BMC.V; SCBI 2 [Hunterian], 971, plate XLII). Lightly toned with a comprehensive portrait and clear legends, few metal stress striations, one nick behind bust. Rev, bold with the slightest of weakness in some of the letter puncheons. Good very fine, very rare mint for this type.
The coin archives system only records three Harold I ‘Fleur de lis’ type pennies for the Colchester mint in the past twenty two years. Two of which were off ered via DNW in both 2020 and 2019, Godric and Wulfwine as the moneyers respectively. Then one has to travel back to March of 2000 to a CNG auction to find another specimen (Wulfwine), CNG had classed their example as extremely rare, due to the mint town for type. Irrespective of mint town, both the Jewel cross and Fleur de Lis issues are becoming increasingly more diffi cult to procure in higher grades.
