Henry VIII (1509-1547), Tournai Groat, dated 1513 first coinage (1509-26), special issue for the capture of TOURNAI in 1513, the coins were produced in 1514. Crowned profi le bust right, initial mark crowned T both sides, legend reads HENRIC DI GRΛ REX FRΛNC AGLIE. Rev, CIVITΛS TORN ACENS surrounds, square topped quartered coat of arms on a cross fourchée. The dies for these coins were produced by Henry Basse, a London based goldsmith and the future chief engraver at the Tower mint. Nearly very fine, skilfully *repaired from three fragments*. An example of a sought after type, darkly toned, rare.
