Ex. From the David J. Fleischmann Collection.

Newark endured three sieges during the English Civil Wars. Logistically it was valuable, given there were two significant roads running through the town, the first being the Great North Way and the other the Fosse way. Royalists considered Newark as a hub for a smooth passage back to their headquarters in Oxford, it also acted as a connecting point the Royalist centres in the North-East. The third siege lasted from November 26th 1645 to May 1646, the period which covers our halfcrown. The siege pieces of Newark were offered in four key denominations (halfcrown, shilling, ninepence and sixpence), with either two dates on offer, 1645 and 1646. The 1645 date halfcrowns are considered the better date of the two, reflected with a higher book price in the Spink standard catalogue.
