Charles I (1625-49), Shilling, Tower mint, group B, type 1a, Lightweight issue, [struck 14th August
– 7th September, 1626] mintmark cross calvary (rev, over lis), crowned bust left in ruff, armour and mantle, value behind, reads CAROLVS D G MAG BR FR ET HI REX, comma and pellet stops. Rev, square-topped shield over long cross fourchée, legend surrounds CHRISTO AVSPICE REGNO, 4.98 (S.2784; N.2218; Sharp B1/1). Darkly toned on a fully rounded flan with much of the outer beaded borders visible, legends and mintmarks immediately recognisable. Some light scratches to the obverse and weak in parts, otherwise bold fine, recorded and recognised as a very rare type, with an illustrious provenance.
