British Guiana, Essequibo & Demerara, George III (1760-1820), silver 2 Guilders, 1809, early strike, GEORGIVS III DEI GRATIA, laureate, cuirassed bust right. Rev. COLONIES OF ESSEQUEBO & DEMARARY TOKEN, crowned denomination in a wreath, 15.54g (Pr. 7; KM 7). In NGC holder graded UNC Details - Cleaned. About Extremely Fine, cleaned in the past and re-toned.
Usually these pieces were very weakly struck with lack of detail on the laureate head. However, in the 1970s six examples appeared that were of superior striking, like this example. It is assumed that these were early strikes
– because of their superior quality perhaps as presentation pieces in these British colonies that were just being
established.
