SCANDINAVIA. Gotland. Woman's bronze box brooch. Circa 8th century AD. (5 cm in diameter, 17 mm thick). With hollow form and back plate for pin and hook, attached after casting. A wavy water pattern in four sections around the side. On the face, a raised boss and four tall bosses surround the shield shaped ornament. Surrounding the boss, four sections loosely formed with short bosses and circular patterns with geometric or zoomorphic design present centrally. Green and brown patina.
