ANGLO-SAXON, Kings of Mercia. Offa. 757-796. AR Penny (17mm, 1.22 g, 10h). Light coinage, non-portrait type. Canterbury mint; Tirweald, moneyer. Struck circa 785-792/3. OF FA RE X in angles of a Celtic cross with decorated limbs and annulet at center containing a pelleted cross with pellets in quarters / TI RVVASD, plain circle containing a cross of petals over a saltire botonnée; all within a serpent-wreath. Chick 132b = EMC 2004.0070 - Coin Register 2005, 143 (this coin); SCBI –; North –; SCBC 904. Toned, minor edge loss and some light porosity on high points. VF. An extremely rare and artistic type.
