In addition to designing the Crystal Palace, Paxton also served as an MP and was a professional gardener. He is also famous for developing the Cavendish banana, named for William Cavendish, 6th Duke of Devonshire, in whose greenhouses Paxton developed the variety. It is today the banana most commonly available in supermarkets around the world.
