After the murder of Constans by the usurper Magnentius, Constans' sister Constantina asked the aged Vetrianio to become emperor. Vetranio soon allied himself to the cause of Magnentius, but by the end of the year AD 350 he begged the clemency of Constantius II and was pardoned and dismissed by the emperor to live out the remainder of his years as a private citizen.
