Ferdinand III lost the Grand Duchy Toscana-Etruria through the Peace Treaty of Lunéville in 1801 and received from Napoleon I as compensation the newly formed Electorate of Salzburg, into which Eichstätt, parts of the Diocese of Passau and Berchtesgaden were incorporated. With the Peace of Bratislava in 1806, however, Salzburg was assigned to the Austrian Empire and Elector Ferdinand, the younger brother of Emperor Franz I, received the new Grand Duchy of Würzburg. With the Peace of Paris in 1814 Würzburg fell to Bavaria and Ferdinand was able to return to his homeland, the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. He reigned there until his death on 18 June 1824.
