MDCLLLXVVVVVVVIIIIIIIII. below. Bramsen 333. 36.15g, 44mm, 12h.

Mint State; attractive gold and blue iridescent tones.

From the R. T. Collection of Napoleonic Medals from the First French Republic and Empire;
Acquired from Phidias (Paris), vente numismatique.

The letters in the reverse inscription which stand out as larger than the others around them, when assembled in the right way, form the Roman numeral MDCLLLXVVVVVVVIIIIIIIII, referring to the year of issue, 1804, in which Napoléon was crowned Emperor. The unusual and lengthy numeral here is based on a dating format which was in fashion at the time and which has since fallen into disuse.
