Jose I gold "Clive of India Wreck" 6400 Reis 1753-R UNC Details (Environmental Damage) NGC, Brazil Rio de Janeiro mint, KM172.2. A survivor of the famous "Clive of India" Shipwreck (sunk in 1755 off South Africa). The actual name of the sunken vessel was Doddington, an East Indiaman of the British East India Company. The ship was travelling to India in the company of Stretham, Pelham, Edgecote, and Houghton, carrying a consignment of gold and silver for Major-General Robert "Clive of India" Clive (who traveled in Stretham), when she struck a rock in Algoa Bay. The treasure was looted by modern-day treasure hunters, who retrieved over 1000 gold coins. After a four-year legal battle in London, a third of the salvaged coins returned to South Africa and the court case, closely monitored by the UNESCO, became an important precedent for the publication of the Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage. A razor-sharp representative, bearing the usual matte-patina, a saltwater effect present on most of the coins retrieved from this wreck. Sold with old dealer's tag.
