Republic gold Contemporary Counterfeit Escudo 1848 POPAYAN-FM About VF (Scratches, Surface Hairlines), cf. KM81.2 (for original type). 20mm. 3.48gm. A charming contemporary imitation for this type that was last minted officially at Popayan in 1836. Though a bit crude in the lettering (the E of Escudo is inverted), the piece still demonstrates a general care of execution, with traces of an engraver's guide detectable on the reverse. Struck in low-purity gold, tested at 48.1% pure.
Ex. Eliasberg Collection (American Numismatic Rarities April 2005, Lot 1609); John H. Clapp Estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942
