Philip IV Plugged/Regulated Cob 8 Reales ND (1621-1667) VG (Corrosion, Plugged, Holed), Mexico City mint, Cal-Type 319. 37mm. 22.13gm. A Philip IV 8 Reales with patches of encrustation and plugged for circulation in Colonial North America. The example offered has two clear plugs alongside a square hole where a third plug might well have fallen out, taking into account the coin's weight and location of hole and subsequent crack. These regulated cob survivors illustrate how the Spanish coins were adjusted to the New York trade standards, with the H.M.S Feversham (sunk off Scatarie Island (Nova Scotia) in 1711) remaining the sole source for shipwreck cobs with obvious silver plugs to adjust the coin's weight. A curious survivor of the makeshift currency of colonial New York.
