Philip IV or Charles II Plugged/Regulated Cob 8 Reales ND (1621-1701) VG (Corrosion, Plugged), Mexico City mint. 40mm. 24.30gm. A Philip IV or Charles II 8 Reales, showing pearly surfaces with some encrustation and plugged for circulation in Colonial North America. These regulated cob survivors illustrate how the Spanish coins were adjusted to the New York trade standards, with the H.M.S Feversham (sunk off Scatarie Island (Nova Scotia) in 1711) remaining the sole source for shipwreck cobs with obvious silver plugs to adjust the coin's weight. An important and historic piece, despite the grade, that will likely to come contested by both Spanish Colonial and US Colonial type collectors.
