Republic gold 8 Escudos 1863 Mo-TH AU Details (Scratches) NGC, Mexico City mint, cf. KM383.9 (listed only as an overdate), Long-pg. 519. A more handsome piece than the grade would at first suggest, with considerable glassy backlight gliding evenly over the surfaces below light wisps. Interestingly, while this type is listed by the Standard Catalog as an 1863/53 overdate only, and indeed most sales records suggest this, all other specimens we have been able to locate showed the bottom loop of the 5 within the loop of the 6 and the top point of the 5 protruding from the head of the 6, this piece does not show those features. Although Long states that mentions of the overdate only started becoming normal in the early 2000s, and that the coin is common as a non-overdate, we have been able to locate no other examples in recent sales records.
