Philip II Cob Real ND (1582-1583) Bo-AP Clipped NGC, Panama City mint, KM0002, Cay-Unl., Cal-236, Sedwick-AP4, Proctor-1R.8B (this coin). 2.61gm. Bernardino Rodríguez as assayer. A classic colonial rarity, and certainly among the most difficult mints within the entire cob series. Presently one of only 3 Panama-minted Reals in NGC's census, emissions from Panama City come in almost universally poor condition, frequently unevenly struck off-center, likely owing to the relatively ephemeral nature of the mint. The first such piece we have offered, the present selection is remarkably well-centered, even given the noted clipping, perhaps to an even greater extent over both sides than the ex. Rubies/Sellschopp/Stuart specimen. According to Proctor, unlike most survivors from this mint which were recovered from the Santiago shipwreck of 1585, this particular specimen is known to have been discovered in the Rimac River in Peru.
